One of our most common requests is for a compact growing evergreen plant that flowers for a long season. Quite a challenge! Fitting the bill perfectly at this time of the year are the Erysimums, the shrubby wallflowers. Growing to 60 – 75cm in a range of varieties Erysimums will flower for many months. Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’, the best known variety has been known to flower continuously for a full year.

Other varieties such as ‘Rysi Copper’, ‘Winter Passion’ and ‘Apricot Twist’ are also valuable garden choices and extend the colour range. So easy to grow, preferring well drained soil, just give them a trim over with shears if they get a touch lanky and they will soon be back in flower. They generally give good service for 2 – 3 years before turning scraggy and then best replaced. They propagate readily from cuttings.
